SWLA SICKLE CELL PRESENTS: SICKLE CELL WARRIOR DOCUMENTARY SCREENING
The lonely and lifelong struggle Don Vallien has faced with a potentially fatal disease is now being introduced to a wider audience. Vallien, an Opelousas resident confronted last year with early stage kidney failure due to sickle cell anemia, received an organ donation last year from a former junior high classmate. The life-changing event captured exclusively last year by a University of Louisiana at Lafayette student who filmed a documentary about the procedure over a four-month period. “These warriors have to deal with things in their everyday lives on top of all the health issues,” Vallien said. “It is a challenge, but hopefully what people see in this film will realize that we are proud of who we are and where we’ve been."
